I have been inspired by minimalism for a while, but I wouldn’t say that I’m a hard-core minimalist. However, I do try to be intentional with the things I keep around me. I believe that having less clutter and more space can help me focus on what matters most and unleash my creativity.
One of the sources of inspiration for me was the documentary “The Minimalists: Less Is Now”, which explores the philosophy and practice of minimalism through the stories of two friends who decided to simplify their lives. The documentary shows how minimalism can help people find more meaning, happiness, and freedom in a world obsessed with consumption and accumulation.
In this blog post, I will share some of the benefits and tips I have experienced from practicing creative minimalism in different areas of my life.
What is Minimalism?
The documentary defines minimalism as “a lifestyle that helps people question what things add value to their lives”. By applying some rules and boundaries to our physical possessions, we can eliminate the unnecessary and irrelevant things from our life, and focus on what we truly need and love.
But minimalism is not only about physical possessions. It can also apply to our mental and emotional spaces, especially for creative people who need to constantly generate new ideas and express themselves in various forms.
Creative minimalism is “a way of creating that focuses on simplicity, clarity, and quality”. By applying some principles and techniques to our creative process, we can declutter our mind and space, inspire new ideas by restricting ourselves, and organize our creative process with minimalism.
Minimalism in Creativity
As a creative person, I often struggle with finding the balance between having enough inspiration and having too much distraction. Sometimes, I feel overwhelmed by the amount of information, stimuli, and options that are available to me. I find it hard to focus on one thing at a time or to finish what I start.
That’s why I decided to adopt some principles of creative minimalism, which can help me improve my productivity and quality of work.
Here are some of the benefits and tips that I have experienced from practicing creative minimalism in my creative process:
- Prioritize your goals and projects. Eliminate the unnecessary and irrelevant things from your life, and focus on what you want to achieve and how you want to do it. Avoid wasting time and energy on things that don’t align with your values and vision.
- Focus on the essential and meaningful. Reduce the noise and clutter from your environment, and concentrate on the task at hand. Avoid getting distracted by trivial details or irrelevant opinions that don’t add value to your work.
- Cultivate creativity and innovation. Limit the resources and options that you have, and challenge yourself to think outside the box and find new ways to solve problems or create something original. Avoid getting stuck in a rut or repeating the same patterns that don’t work.
- Define your purpose and audience. Clarify the why and who of your creative work, and have more direction and motivation on what you want to create and how you want to present it. Avoid creating something that is irrelevant or unappealing to yourself or others.
- Plan and execute your projects. Break down your projects into manageable steps and tasks, and have more structure and discipline in how you work on them. Avoid procrastinating or abandoning them halfway.
- Refine and polish your work. Edit and revise your work with a critical eye, and have more quality and consistency in what you produce. Avoid making mistakes or leaving out important details.
Creative minimalism is not about depriving yourself of the things you love or need. It is about being mindful and intentional with the things you choose to have or do in your life. By practicing creative minimalism, you can declutter your mind and space, inspire new ideas by restricting yourself, and organize your creative process with minimalism. You can also enjoy more freedom, happiness, and fulfillment in your creative journey.
